Sandra Isimbi

In 1994, over the course of just 100 days, between 800 000 and 1 million Tutsis were systematically murdered in the African country of Rwanda. The genocide of the Tutsis by the Hutus wiped out approximately 20% of Rwanda’s population. Most of the killings were performed not by the military, but by civilians against civilians, neighbours against neighbours.

Montreal is home to a large population of Rwandan genocide survivors. Page Rwanda is a growing organization that not only serves and supports the Rwandan community in Montreal, but focuses on transmitting memory of the genocide. Sandra Isimbi speaks about the work Page Rwanda does, and of the importance of memorializing mass human atrocity.
