The Montreal Institute for Genocide and Human Rights Studies (MIGS) is recognized internationally as Canada's pre-eminent centre for the study of genocide and crimes against humanity. MIGS strives to establish and manage major research programs focused on the prevention and prosecution of genocide and other crimes against humanity. MIGS also develops educational programs and helps victims of mass atrocity crimes and survivors of genocide end their isolation. By conducting cutting-edge research, MIGS furthers understanding of the history, sociology, and international legal frameworks pertaining to genocide, other crimes against humanity, and reconciliation in their wake.
MIGS organizes workshops and lectures and publishes books, reports and articles. Moreover, MIGS works nationally and internationally to educate students, the public, media, and governments about genocide and mass atrocity crime prevention.
Founded in 1986 in the departments of History and Sociology/Anthropology at Concordia University, MIGS now combines the multidisciplinary talents of Concordia faculty members and graduate students from Communications, English, Geography, Humanities, and Political Science. MIGS has also developed partnerships with faculties from McGill University and the University of Quebec in Montreal.
